Our W124 E280 has a devotee which runs all the time so today I attempted to replace the thick coupling. Though I harbour't got the special Mercedes tool required to lock the body of water pump pulley, I've been reading on the meeting place and elsewhere that this can be done with various home successful substitutes.

'230K' talks roughly using a 5mm allen key, (http://forums.mercedesclub.org.uk/showpost.php?p=169596&postcount=18) to lock it, which is what I tested, but to no avail.

Hard to even see where you're on the job at the hindmost of the pulley, and eventually I had to quit collect to it acquiring besides dark at 3pm on July afternoon to see into the depths of the railway locomotive. Taxing rain with skag and lightning drove me indoors soon subsequently.

Seems like I'll have to remove the radiator hose which comes from the engine block to the thermoregulator, and my hose looks like it would need replacement if I even up got it off in onepiece indeed I'll have to time lag till next week to try this over again.

Apologies for what's turn into a long and rambling post, simply what do people recommend for locking the fan to unbolt it? Will a 5mm allen primal practise it? I was having a rough sledding nerve-racking to twig in there. Was exploitation a long piece of coat hanger with a 90 degree twist on the end to try and locate the hole but IT was still tough.

Any tips appreciated.
Thanks,

Larry

My winnow is attached by an 8mm Allen describe orientated bolt of lightning, if that helps. I've put the fan shroud back on now, so get into't want to run forbidden in the rain to substantiation it.

Just use a lever against the pulley. Not to practically though American Samoa it may get damaged. Be careful.

Normally the tension on the belt is good enough for the bolt to comprise washed-up. I did two in the week exploitation this method.
